1. How do I submit NYS ELA and Math State Test scores? 

The NYCDOE receives state test data directly, so families of public school students will not need to submit test scores. Families of private or home school students will be contacted regarding these test scores.

2. My child does not have New York State English Language Arts (ELA) or Math scores for the 2014-15 school year. Can we still apply? 

For children without New York State ELA or Math test scores from the 2014-15 school year, families may submit official student test scores, administered within the current school year, that are comparable to New York State Math and ELA assessments.

A comparable assessment is defined as any standardized achievement test that assesses the Common Core Standards in reading, writing, and math at the grade level in which the child is currently enrolled (e.g. a family applying for enrollment in grade 4 will need to submit grade 3 assessment results). The assessment must have published evidence regarding its reliability and validity. School-created assessments will not meet these criteria. The assessment results submitted must include performance level indicators along with the definition of those indictors.

3. My child was tested for entry into the Gifted & Talented program in grades K-3 during a previous school year. May we use those scores for admissions? 

The New York City Gifted and Talented Assessment Program (GTAP) Test Scores may not be used for placement for grades 4 or 5, as the standardized assessments to be considered for enrollment in grades 4 or 5 must have been administered within the current school year. 2

4. How will eligibility be determined? 

Eligibility will be determined based on a comprehensive review of three measures, each of which will be weighted equally:

• New York State test scores (or other acceptable standardized test results, as noted above)

• 2015 report card grade

• Descriptors of exceptional characteristics provided by the student’s teacher

Reviewers will be looking for evidence of exceptionality in the following areas:

capacity to learn,

application of knowledge,

creative and productive thinking,

motivation to succeed.

5. Who is conducting the placement reviews? 

The reviews will be conducted by a team of experienced educators from the Central office who will norm and score the exams based on the three measures listed above.

6. How do I apply for a grade 4 or 5 G&T placement for my child? 

Families must submit a Request for Placement form in person at a Family Welcome Center. This form will be used to initiate the process of collecting the various elements used to determine eligibility.
