February 17, 2017

Dear 4-243 Families,

As we head into our Winter Break, I want to update you on what we’ve been working on in class.

Reading Partnerships have come to a close, however we continue to read independently and students are expected to continue jotting entries in reading notebooks regularly.  Additionally, we have been “close reading” short texts in order to really dig deeply into stories and to analyze them based on characters, themes, and author’s craft.  Students are writing “short responses” off of these texts which are due each Friday.  Keep an eye out for returned work that will have feedback from me.  All of this work then leads us to writing Literary Essays.  We are about to publish our independent essays on one text.   Next, will be a comparative essay.  All of this leads us to ….ELA test prep.

We are working on preparing children for the State Tests.  We have administered some pre-tests to determine areas of need for both the whole class and more individual needs. I will be able to discuss this with you in more detail during parent teacher conferences which are now open. Please see below for instructions on signing up.

In math we continue our fraction work. We expect to distribute the Math Test Prep materials mid March.  We still have some content to teach, so please be patient but rest assured that all areas will be covered in time for the test, which is in early May.

Our Social Studies unit is on Early Colonization.  We are reading and taking notes about European immigration to the “New World” during the early 1600’s and will continue in a chronological order through the Revolution and then Early Government later in the spring.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions or concerns.

With best regards,

Donna
