October 25, 2017 Dear PS 77 and PS 198 Teachers and Families,
On Tuesday, October 17th, we held our first Student Council meetings of the 2017-2018 school year. Two students from each class were chosen to be representatives for our lower and upper grade groups. To open the meetings, we welcomed our student leaders and spoke to them about their responsibilities as leaders and the important role the Student Council plays in our school.
For the Lower Grade meeting, our session began with a “Name Game” Toss. Standing in a circle, each student was given the opportunity to catch a ball, share their name and something about them, and toss the ball to another student. The game continued with questions like, “What’s your favorite thing about school so far?” and “What is something you enjoy doing outside of school?”
We also read-aloud The Most Magnificent Thing, by Ashley Spires, about a girl who doesn’t give up in her quest to make the most magnificent thing. We had a wonderful discussion about perseverance, an important value and one which many leaders possess.
We began our Upper Grade with the icebreaker “Find Someone Who”. Students were given a sheet with 12 boxes. This was a fun way of getting students to find other representatives to fill each of the 12 boxes and learn something new about one another.
The main activity this week was to brainstorm ideas for our Monthly, Building-Wide Spirit Days! Here are the ones that were chosen!
|Friday, November 17th||Pajama day|
|Friday, December 22nd||Bring a stuffed animal day|
|Friday, January 26th||Jersey/sports team shirt day|

|Thursday, March 29th||Career day|
|Friday, April 27th||Crazy hair day|
|Friday, May 25th||Hat day|

Both meetings ended with the famous “Student Council Handshake” followed by distributing a copy of the meeting agenda to take back to the classroom with them.
