Football in PE!!!
In February, students in all grade levels will participate in the Rising Road Runners incentive program. For this program, students will participate in activities that develop proper running form. We will discuss vocabulary such as endurance, strength, flexibility and pace.
In addition to the running program, students will learn/review football skills such as throwing, catching, gripping and carrying the football. In Kindergarten and 1st grade, students will practice carrying the football in relays and stations. In addition, they will use soft gator skin balls to learn the overhand throw and basket catch. The goal for the kindergarten and 1st grade students is to develop eye-hand coordination and body control.
In the 2nd and 3rd grade, students will begin learning advanced skills such as route running, hand offs, switching hands with the ball and throwing for further distances. Students will conclude their football unit by playing an ultimate football. In this game, students must advance the ball up the court and score touchdowns. The football vocabulary for these grades will include end zone, touchdown, quarterback, fumble and interception.
In the 4th and 5th grade, students will participate in fitnessgram assessments such as the sit & reach and trunk lift. These assessments measure students flexibility and muscular strength. In addition, students will review football skills such as throwing, catching, route running, ball security and defense. Finally, students will play in modified football games that enable students to use their skills in-game situations.
