I hope you’ve had a restful spring break. In April, our students will be completing their fitnessgram assessments. The fitnessgram assessments help students and their families develop personal goals for life long fitness. Students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade participate only in the BMI assessment. This BMI assessment requires the teacher to measure the students height and weight in Physical Education class. The BMI assessment is used as a tool to teach students about body composition.
Students in 4th and 5th grade that missed participating in the pacer test, push-up, curl-up, trunk lift and sit & reach will have an opportunity to make-up their test this month. These assessments are used to teach students about fitness components such as aerobic capacity, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility.
In addition to completing fitnessgram assessments, students in all grade levels will receive nutrition lessons in Physical Education class. Students will learn or review the food groups from MyPlate. In addition, we will discuss why its important to consume enough food and drink plenty of water each day.
Finally, students will continue participating in track and field activities such as hurdles, long jump, shot put, relays, sprints and distance runs. Students in the 4th and 5th grade track team will be training at recess on Tuesday’s and Friday’s. The track meets will be held on Friday, April 20th, 27th and May 11th.
