This is an exciting time of the year for the Physical Education program. Students in all grade levels are reviewing skills and games for Field Day and the summer. In Kindergarten and 1st grade, students are participating in a variety of activities that review locomotors such as walking, skipping, side shuffles and jogging. In addition, students are playing games that improve eye-hand and eye-foot coordination such as Pillow Polo and Number Soccer. In 2nd and 3rd grade, students are participating in modified soccer and hockey games. We place strong emphasis on students showing sportsmanship, team work and effort. In 4th and 5th grade, students have returned to playing in their sports league teams.
In all grade levels, we continue to practice meditation and deep breathing exercises throughout the class.
We discuss how exercise can decrease your stress and improve your confidence. At the conclusion of Physical Education class, students complete 1 to 2 minute meditation challenges as a way to calm themselves down.
In the Monday running club, students participated in a Mini Track Meet where students participated in events such as the standing long jump and shot put. In addition, students were timed while running 15 laps around the gym.
The Tuesday morning running club will have their mini track meet on Tuesday, June 12th in the gymnasium.
On Saturday, June 8th, we have the track final at Icahn Stadium in Randalls Island. Students across all five boroughs will compete in a variety of events such as the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter, 800 meter, long jump, shot put and 4 X 100 Relay.
